Abstract

Ephesians 4:11–16 deals with building up the body of Christ using a variety of gifts apportioned by Christ. In an attempt to comprehend this biblical text, some scholars have suggested that the work of ministry is solely for the clergy. In contrast, others believe the work of ministry is also for every believer. A proper study of Ephesians 4:11–16 provides an understanding that can correct erroneous views. The study used the historical-grammatical method of hermeneutics to study Ephesians 4:11–16. This study recognizes that every believer has received grace gift(s) for edifying the church and examines the functions of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers in building up the body of Christ. Finally, churches ought to focus on attaining “unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God” (v. 13a) and “maturity of the fullness of Christ” (v. 13b).
